Community Health Initiatives

Develops, implements and evaluates culturally targeted interventions for health promotion and the early detection of disease in clinical sites, worksites, churches and communities.

Designs, conducts and analyzes focus groups, specifically for the development of survey and research tools and to inform the design of culturally tailored educational materials and interventions.

WVU School of Physical Education

Sports and physical education play a large role in many people’s lives. WVU’s School of Physical Education allows you to study the interrelationship between the mind and the body and the interaction of sports and culture. We train physical education teachers, coaches for every sport, athletic trainers, sport managers and sport psychologists.

CERTIFIED FITNESS SPECIALIST

The School of Physical Education offers courses to all students for national fitness certification from the American Council on Exercise (ACE) in Personal Training, Group Fitness (Aerobic) Instrutor, and Lifestyle & Weight Management Consultant. Wheeling Walks

Making walking a healthy habit for life will improve heart, brain, and other body functions at all ages.

Walk 100 miles in 100 days, March 19th-June 26th, 2007

This is 14-week contest incorporated into the employee Wellness Program. The contest serves as a means of improving the health of employees through physical activity.

Student Recreation Center

The WVU Student Recreation Center on the Evansdale Campus is an incredible benefit for the entire WVU community. You can clear your mind, stay in shape, and recharge your spirit at our facility.

WVU Health Science Library

WVU Health Science Library includes books on nutrition, exercise, fitness, and the obesity epidemic. The site also includes many government and consumer websites.

West Virginia on the Move

Assists West Virginians, regardless of athletic ability, to increase the physical activity in their lifestyle and make smarter food choices in order to maintain a healthy weight.

Inner Life Yoga Studio

Inner Life Yoga Studio is now offering a 25% discount to West Virginia University employees and students for enrolling in yoga classes. To obtain the discount 10 persons must sign up for the 8-week courses during the same time period. The next set of courses will begin the week of September 12-16th. An Open House including a yoga demonstration and free introductory yoga class will take place Sunday September 11th at 2-4 pm. This is a great opportunity to see the facility, meet the teachers and have a first hand experience of the benefits of yoga.

Inner Life Yoga Studio is a well-equipped yoga facility offering evening and daytime classes 6 days per week. It is located in the Quaker Meeting House in Sabraton at the corner of Putnam St. and Denver Ave. Services include different level classes for beginners and more experienced students, private and group yoga therapy sessions for persons with special needs and a meditation-based stress reduction program (Sept. 14-Nov 9th). The instructors, Kimberly Williams, Ph.D and Siegfried Bleher, Ph.D are the only certified Iyengar yoga teachers in West Virginia and have been teaching since 1995. They are available for worksite presentations on the health, fitness and stress management benefits of yoga and meditation at no charge.
